Dirt work is the plain name for moving ground until it sits the way you need it. That covers leveling a lot, filling a low spot and grading so water runs off instead of standing. We do dirt work on house lots, acreage and ranch land, across San Antonio and 50 miles around it.

Most dirt work starts with the grade. We look at where water goes now and where it should go. The machines cut the high side, move that dirt low and shape a slope that drains. A small lot can be a day, acreage a week or more.
Some sites do not have enough dirt to begin with. A pad has to rise out of a flat field, or a washed out drive built back. That is when fill dirt, select fill and caliche come in by the truckload. Select fill is picked for how it compacts, so it goes under slabs and pads.
Fill goes down in lifts, each layer spread and packed before the next lands on it. Dirt left loose settles later and cracks what sits on top. Builders working from engineered plans call this same work site preparation.
Three kinds of ground meet around San Antonio. North and west of the city the Edwards limestone reaches the surface. The Edwards Aquifer Authority puts about 1,250 square miles of that limestone at the surface in the recharge zone. Grading up there means thin soil over rock, with caliche in the cut.
East and northeast the ground turns to Blackland Prairie clay. The NRCS calls this dark clay the state soil of Texas, with very high shrink swell. It swells when it rains and pulls apart when it dries. Clay like that gets moisture conditioned and packed before a pad goes on.
South toward Pleasanton the South Texas Plains take over. Published county soil descriptions there put loamy surface layers over clay subsoil. Sandy ground cuts clean and drains fast, but it will not hold a bank like clay. We tell you which one you have up front.
The National Weather Service logged 11.26 inches at San Antonio International Airport on October 17, 1998. That is the city's wettest calendar day on record. Ground that sheds a slow rain floods in one like that. Grading for drainage gives the water a path and a place to go.
Ranch dirt work has its own list. A road that washes out every spring wants a crown, a ditch and caliche on top. Pads for a barn, a shop or a house get raised and packed in lifts. Plenty of these jobs also come with a stock tank to dig or clean out.
Brush usually comes off before the dirt moves, which is land clearing. Grading follows once you can see the ground. When the shaping is done we go over the property with you, and anything still holding water gets worked again.
