Forestry mulching clears standing brush without hauling anything off. A forestry mulcher rolls into cedar, mesquite and small trees and grinds them where they stand. What was a thicket in the morning is open ground under a layer of chips. We do this work across San Antonio and about 50 miles around the city.

The head on a forestry mulcher is a steel drum with teeth that spins fast. It meets a standing trunk and grinds it down from the top. The chips drop straight to the ground under the machine. Everything it cuts stays on the property as cover.
The wheeled mulcher handles the heavy standing stuff out in the open. Skid steers with mulching heads follow it into tight spots, along fences and around buildings. Between the two, a tract gets opened up in one trip.
A mulching day starts with a look at the tract and a mark on what stays. Then the machine works a pattern, and the thickest ground usually goes first. Passes overlap so the chip layer comes out even. We show you the finished ground before the machines load up.
You get a flat mat of wood chips over the whole worked area. Stems are cut off low, close to flush with the dirt. Root balls stay in the ground, and the topsoil is never scraped or dug. Most tracts can be driven right after the machine finishes.
That chip layer does real work in the South Texas climate. The USDA publishes a conservation standard for mulching. It lists erosion control and moisture management among the reasons to cover bare ground with plant material. The same standard sets a minimum of two inches for wood mulch, so it stays put in heavy rain.
Bexar County sits in a federal nonattainment area for ozone, which changes how brush gets handled here. Under the state outdoor burning rule, a land clearing burn there is allowed only when no practical alternative exists. Grinding the brush on site is one of those alternatives. County burn bans come and go with the weather on top of that.
North and west of San Antonio the problem is usually cedar. Ashe juniper takes over Hill Country pasture, fence lines and the ground under the oaks. Mulching suits that brush well. AgriLife Extension material puts Ashe juniper down as a non-sprouting species, so cutting it low finishes the plant.
South and east of the city it is mesquite and huisache instead. Both of those sprout again from the base once the top comes off. Mulching opens the pasture now, and that ground will want a follow up later. We will tell you which kind of brush you have before you pick a method.
Big trees are where the mulcher stops. The head is built for brush and small trees, so anything past that goes on the estimate as separate work. Excavators take those out whole, root ball and all. Shaping and fill are a separate step too, handled as dirt work and grading.
