Partial removal breaks the shell up and fills the hole. Full removal takes everything out and hauls it off.

Partial removal is the common choice. We drain the pool, then break the walls down below grade, usually the top 2 to 3 feet. Drainage holes get punched through the floor so water cannot sit in the shell. The broken concrete goes in the bottom of the hole, and clean fill goes over it in lifts.
Full removal takes the whole shell out. The floor, the walls, the steel and the plumbing come up and get loaded. Nothing stays in the ground, and dump truck hauling takes the debris off the property. Then the hole is filled with clean dirt and compacted in lifts.
Partial removal is faster and it costs less. Full removal is what a builder wants when something is going on that spot later. The fill settles less, and a compaction test can be run on it. We price the job both ways.
When we pull out, the hole is filled and compacted and the ground is graded to shed water. The deck and the coping are gone. What is left is open dirt where the pool used to be, ready for grass or a garden.
If the yard needs more than the pool footprint leveled, that is dirt work and it goes in the same estimate. Low spots and a back yard that never drained right can be fixed while the machine is there.
The old deck is usually the next question. Concrete around the pool comes out with the shell. Concrete removal covers the rest of the patio, the sidewalk or the driveway. A concrete contractor pours new flatwork after we are done.
Inside the San Antonio city limits, settle the permit question first. The city's demolition bulletin lists above ground swimming pools among the things that need no demolition permit. The pool gets drained before a machine touches it. Storm drains here run straight to the nearest creek, so the city and SAWS set where that water can go. After that, the machine has to reach the back yard. Most pools sit behind a fence, and the gate is rarely wide enough, so panels come out and go back.
North and west of San Antonio the soil is thin over limestone, and rock makes a full dig out slower. East and south of the city it is deep clay that swells when wet and shrinks when it dries. Fill has to go in at the right moisture to compact in that clay, so rain holds the work up.
